Back a few years ago we purchased a timeshare unit for every other year in Orlando.  As it turns out it really doesn’t fit our lifestyle so over the years we have tried to find places to change that perception.  In September of 2005 we decided to try Galveston, Texas.

Golden Orb SpiderIt comes as no shock that early September in Texas is still hot with temps in the 90s.  What we also found was an outpouring of Golden Orb Spiders that seemed to hang off every branch on the trails and some of the quickest and most unrelenting marsh mosquitoes imaginable.  Most of our time however was spent walking and exploring the coastline of Texas.

Clapper RailWe spent time on Galveston Island walking the shoreline near our condo and the trails of Galveston State Park; watching the Clapper Rails along Sportsmens Road and shorebirds at San Luis Pass.

Outside of Galveston we traveled to Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, Brazos Bend State Park, flushed a Chuck-will's-widow at Sabine Woods.

Black Skimmers @ Bolivar FlatsJust North of Galveston we crossed over to High Island exploring the Bolivar Flats, Boy Scout Woods, Smith Oaks and Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge.

We concluded our trip in and around the Houston area, stopping at the Edith Moore Sanctuary, W G Jones State Forest, Bear Creek Park and Jesse Jones Park finding Red-headed and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers.

Memories that will always remain will be those of seeing the impact that Hurricane Katrina had upon those families transplanted in and around the Houston Area.  We can’t even begin to imagine their feelings, their fears, or their hopes for the future.  It certainly puts things in perspective…
