Big Bend National ParkWith Paul starting his new job at the Museum of Science, our 2008 trip selections took a bit more planning and creative usage of our vacation time than usual.  But in the end the effort was well worth the reward.

April brought us to Western Texas with our friends Christopher and Pamela to seek out the endangered bird species of the Texas Hill Country - the lofty peaks, vast plains, and rugged wilderness of Big Bend National Park - and a unique oasis in the vastness of the Trans-Pecos, the Davis Mountains.

Some changes in 2008 were in store for our traditional long weekend trips throughout May, June and July – while we were able to get to Twin Lakes Village in NH, Paul’s annual trip to Oceanedge on Cape Cod was canceled this year and with our Rangely Lakes trip in ME scheduled for the 4th of July weekend we had to pass on that this year as the 4th of July is a large scale event at the Museum due to it’s exceptional vista of the Charles River.

Tiger - Ranthambore NPOur signature trip for the year brought us to India: a mystical land of striking contrasts with fabulously rich heritage, inviting people, and adventurous food. India also offers a mixture of abundant birding opportunities, mist-cloaked vistas, and the entrancing Tiger.

Observing a wild tiger is  truly a memorable experience, and we feel privileged to have had the opportunity of viewing them in their natural habitat. (click the tiger picture  to view a wmv file)

"A tiger is a large-hearted gentleman with boundless courage, and when he is exterminated - as exterminated he will be unless public opinion rallies to his support - India will be the poorer by having lost the finest of her fauna."

-- Jim Corbett

With 2008 behind us we’ve already begun to dream up our trips for 2009 – Oaxaca, Mexico? Madagascar? Peru? Time will tell where we go, maybe one of these locations, maybe all, or perhaps a new option will emerge that captures our fascination.....
